What each content type can do

Overview
--------

Choosing a content type settles more than which fields you fill in. It also decides how the page is built, what it can be filed under, and where it appears on the site.

This article sets the three types side by side so you can see what you are getting. For how to start a new item, see [**Creating content and choosing the right content type**](/articles/creating-content-and-choosing-the-right-content-type).

---

What every type gives you
-------------------------

These work the same way on all three, so you can rely on them whatever you are making:

- **Banner**: an optional subtitle and banner image across the top of the page.
- **Workflow**: every item is saved as Draft, Published or Unpublished, so nothing goes live by accident.
- **Menu settings**: puts the item in the site navigation.
- **URL alias**: builds the address from the title, or takes one you type yourself.
- **Simple XML Sitemap**: controls whether search engines are told about the item. Only administrators see this setting.
- **Revision log message**: notes what you changed, and every save is kept in a full version history.
- **Preview** and **Duplicate**, and a draft kept automatically while you type.

The workflow covers all three
-----------------------------

Articles, events and landing pages all use the same workflow, with three states: **Draft**, **Published** and **Unpublished**. You choose the state with **Save as** on a new item and **Change to** on an existing one. See [**Content workflow and statuses**](/articles/content-workflow-and-statuses).

An administrator can see which types the workflow covers under **Configuration**, then **Workflows**, by opening **Basic**.

Available but not switched on
-----------------------------

Scheduling, which publishes or takes down an item at a set date and time, is installed but switched off for all three types. An administrator can turn it on for each type separately. See [**Scheduling content to publish later**](/articles/scheduling-content-to-publish-later).

---

Asking for a change
-------------------

Scheduling is a setting, so an administrator can switch it on whenever you need it.

The differences in the side-by-side table are built in. Adding components to events, or a date field to articles, changes how the site is put together and goes through whoever maintains it. Worth asking for if a type is close to what you need and short of one thing.
