 Tables and the Source view

Overview
--------

**Insert table** and **Source** are the two least-used buttons in the editor. **Insert table** builds a grid of rows and columns. **Source** shows the HTML behind what you have written.

This article covers both, and how to stop formatting pasted in from somewhere else from spoiling a page.

---

Tables
------

A table is right when you have rows and columns of comparable facts: opening hours, fees, a list of locations and their capacities. It is wrong as a way to line things up on the page, because a table that exists only for layout falls apart on a phone.

### Inserting a table

1. Put the cursor where the table should go.
2. Press **Insert table** on the toolbar.
3. Move across the grid to choose how many rows and columns you need, then click. You can add more later.

### Changing a table you have made

Click inside the table and a toolbar appears above it:

Button

What it does

Column

Adds or removes a column, or sets the first column as a header column.

Row

Adds or removes a row, or sets the first row as a header row.

Merge cells

Joins a cell with its neighbour, or splits it again, so a merge is not a one-way decision.

Toggle caption

Adds a caption line to the table, or removes it.

Cell properties and Table properties

Borders, background colours, sizes and alignment. Leave these alone unless you have a reason: the site's own table styling usually looks better.

> **💡 Note:** Set the first row as a header row. It is not only styling: it tells a screen reader which heading belongs to which cell, so the table can be read aloud in a way that makes sense.

Keep tables narrow. Four or five columns is usually the most that will fit comfortably on a phone screen.

The Source view
---------------

**Source**, at the end of the toolbar, swaps the editor for the HTML behind what you have written. Press it again to go back.

Most editors never need it. It is useful for seeing why something looks wrong, such as a stray empty paragraph or a list that did not close properly.

> **⚠️ Important:** The editor keeps whatever you type in **Source**, including code that can upset the layout of the page or pull in styling that does not belong. If you are not sure what a piece of code does, leave it out and use the toolbar instead.

---

Pasting from elsewhere
----------------------

Paste from Word, a PDF or another website and the text keeps its old styling: colours, fonts and underlining all come with it. That is how one page ends up looking as though it belongs to a different site.

### Pasting cleanly

1. Paste the text in.
2. Select what you have just pasted and press **Remove Format**.
3. Apply headings, bold, lists and links with the toolbar.

This takes a few seconds and saves the longer job of working out why one paragraph is a different size from the rest.
