Overview
--------

Everything you do as an editor requires you to sign in first. Visitors read your site without one; you need an account to add or change anything.

### How to sign in

You need two things: the username you were given, and your password. If you do not have them yet, the person who set up your site can create your account.

1. Go to your site's sign-in page by adding /user/login to the end of your site's address. Your public pages may not show a sign-in link, so bookmark this page for next time.
2. In **Username or email address**, type either one.
3. In **Password**, type your password.
4. Press **Log in**.

> **💡 Note:** Your account is personal. Everything you publish, edit or delete is recorded against your name, which is what makes it possible to see who changed a page and to put it back if something goes wrong. Sharing a login removes that, so each person who needs access should have their own account.

---

If you cannot sign in
---------------------

The most common cause is a mistyped password, so try again carefully before anything else. Check that Caps Lock is off, and that your browser has not auto-filled an old password from another site.

Repeated wrong guesses lock the account. After five failed attempts within six hours, the site temporarily blocks sign-in for that account and says so on the sign-in page. Resetting your password, below, signs you straight back in and lifts the block.

### Reset your password

If the password is definitely wrong, the site can email you a one-time link. Following that link signs you in and lets you set a new password, so you never have to remember the old one.

1. On the sign-in page, click **Forgot your password?** You can also go straight to /user/password.
2. Type your **Username or email address**.
3. Press **Reset**.
4. Open the email the site sends you and click the link in it.
5. The link opens a **Reset password** page. Press **Log in** on it.
6. You are signed in and taken to your profile, where you can set a new password.

Three points about that email:

- The link works only once. If you click it, then click it again later, it will not work the second time. Request a fresh one.
- It expires. A link left for a day will need to be replaced.
- Check your junk folder before assuming it never arrived.

If the reset email does not arrive at all, the account may be registered to a different address, or blocked. That needs an administrator, not another reset attempt.

What you see once you are in
----------------------------

The clearest sign that you are signed in is the administration sidebar, a panel down the left-hand side of every page that visitors never see.

![Animation: the Dashboard with the full administration sidebar, pressing CMS, and arriving at the Content screen.](/storage/pOWtET7yfK5PBlnD9qYpltY8MyYdcqWPlpuEkTuo.gif)

It lists the places you can work, in groups:

Group

What it is for

**Dashboard**

Your starting point, on its own at the top.

**Create**

Adding something new.

**Pages**, **Blocks**, **CMS**, **Media** and **Trash**

Where your content lives.

**Front page**

A link to your site's home page, with shortcuts underneath. Which shortcuts you see depends on your role.

**Tools**, **Structure**, **Appearance**, **Extend**, **Configuration**, **People** and **Reports**

Where the site itself is set up.

**Help** and your own username

At the very bottom.

Signing in takes you straight to the **Dashboard** rather than to the public site. To go back to the public pages, press **Back to site** at the top of any administration screen.

The arrow at the bottom left collapses the sidebar when you want more room, and brings it back.

> **ℹ️ Info:** What the sidebar offers you depends on your role. An editor sees fewer options than an administrator, and that is by design rather than something missing. For more, see [**Roles and what they let you do**](/articles/roles-and-what-they-let-you-do).

Signing out
-----------

1. Press your username at the bottom of the sidebar. A panel opens next to the sidebar with three choices: **View profile**, **Edit profile** and **Log out**.
2. Choose **Log out**.

You are signed out straight away and returned to the sign-in page. The sidebar vanishes, which is the quickest way to tell it worked. If you can still see it, you are still signed in.

![Animation: pressing your username at the bottom of the sidebar, choosing Log out, and arriving at the sign-in page with the sidebar gone.](/storage/OUuVcQOFjOtUDfNjAzZEDw9zo0KkQUc1yQ89zhGn.gif)

The username sits in the same place everywhere, on the public site and on any admin screen. **Edit profile** in that same menu is where you change your own password.

Closing the browser tab is not the same as signing out. On a shared or public computer, sign out properly. Otherwise the next person to open that browser may still be signed in as you, with your name against anything they do.

> **💡 Note:** If you still cannot sign in, ask your site administrator. If they cannot resolve it, contact the Doghouse SaaS support team.
