Overview
--------

Search suggestions offer words and phrases as a visitor types into the search box, before they press **Search**. They help people spell a term the way your pages do, and find a page in fewer tries.

Not switched on

The search box does not offer suggestions yet. Visitors type a full search and press **Search**.

> **⚠️ Important:** This is administrator work. Content editors cannot reach the search settings.

Switching suggestions on
------------------------

1. Go to **Configuration**, then **Search and metadata**, then **Search API**.
2. Open the **Content** index and choose the **Autocomplete** tab.
3. Under **Searches provided by Views**, tick **Search**. That is the site search.
4. Press **Save**, then **Edit** beside the search to choose where suggestions come from and how many are shown.

> **💡 Note:** Suggestions are drawn from the same index the site search uses, so they only offer words from published pages. See [**Site search**](/articles/site-search).

Before you switch them on
-------------------------

- Try them on a copy of the site first. Suggestions built from page text can include odd fragments, and the settings decide how much text they draw on.
- Suggestions attach to the search box in the header. The search box in the homepage banner is a separate form and needs a developer to add them there too.
