 Reviewing and restoring previous versions

Overview
--------

Every time you save a page, the site keeps a copy of how it looked beforehand. Nothing is overwritten and nothing is lost, so a change you regret can be undone even weeks later.

That history is useful for three things:

- Seeing what changed, when, and who changed it.
- Reading a page as it stood on an earlier date.
- Putting an earlier version back if a change turns out to be wrong.

---

Leaving a note with your change
-------------------------------

The history is far more useful when each entry says what changed. The **Revision log message** box sits near the top of the right-hand column on the edit form.

1. Make your change to the page.
2. In **Revision log message**, write a line describing what you changed.
3. Press **Save**.

A few words is enough. Say what changed and why, not how:

> Corrected the closing date after the venue confirmed.

That line then appears in the history beside the date, which is what turns a list of timestamps into something a colleague can actually use six months later.

> **💡 Note:** Above the box, **Create new revision** reads **Revisions are required**. Every save is kept in the history, and you cannot switch that off.

---

Viewing the history
-------------------

1. Open the page.
2. In the bar across the top, press **More actions** (the three dots beside **Edit**).
3. Choose **Revisions**.

Saves are listed newest first. Each one shows the date and time, who saved it, its status, and the log message if one was written. The version currently on the site is marked **Current revision**.

### Reading an earlier version

Click the date of any older save. The page opens as it stood at that moment, so you can read it before deciding whether to restore it.

### Comparing two versions

Once a page has been saved more than once, you can put two versions side by side and see exactly what changed between them.

1. On the **Revisions** screen, choose the older version in the **Source revision** column.
2. Choose the newer version in the **Target revision** column.
3. Press **Compare selected revisions**.

The comparison shows the page with the changes marked. Added text is highlighted in green and underlined, and removed text is highlighted in red and struck through. Above the page, **Comparing** names the two versions with their log messages, and **Next change** or **Previous change** moves through the history one save at a time.

> **💡 Note:** The comparison covers the title and the main content: the components on an article or landing page, and the Body on an event. Changes on the Banner tab, on an event's Event details tab and in the right-hand column are not marked, so check those by opening each version. Leave **Layout** on **Visual Inline**, because the other layouts do not show changes made inside components.

---

Restoring an earlier version
----------------------------

1. On the **Revisions** screen, find the version you want back.
2. Press **Revert** on that row.
3. Read the confirmation page and press **Revert** again.

Restoring does not delete anything. The version you moved away from stays in the list, so you can go back to it just as easily.

Anyone who can edit a page can also restore an earlier version of it, so this is not a job you need to pass to an administrator.

### Check the status afterwards

A restored version brings its old status with it, so a page can come back as a draft and drop off the site. Check it before you walk away:

1. Edit the page and look at **Current state** in the right-hand column.
2. If it is not what you want, choose the right state from **Change to**.
3. Press **Save**.

Removing a version
------------------

A single save can be removed from the history for good, but only by an administrator. Content editors do not have this option.

> **⚠️ Important:** Deleting a version cannot be undone, and it is almost never necessary. The history costs nothing to keep and is the only way back from a mistake. Leave it alone unless a version contains something that must not stay on the site.
