 Recovering unsaved work with autosave

Overview
--------

Every form for creating or editing content quietly keeps a copy of what you have typed, saved automatically while you work. This is separate from pressing **Save**: it never publishes anything and never counts as a saved version, but it means a closed tab, a lost connection or an accidental navigation does not have to cost you the words you already wrote.

---

How it works
------------

Every 60 seconds, the site saves a copy of the form you are working on in the background. A small **Saving draft...** notification in the bottom right corner of the screen confirms it happened.

This happens automatically, with nothing for you to press. It works the same way on articles, events and landing pages, whether you are creating a new item or editing one that already exists.

Forms for blocks, such as the hero or a site alert, and for files in the media library are not autosaved. Save those before you leave them.

> **💡 Note:** Autosave only keeps a working copy for you to come back to. It does not press **Save** on your behalf, does not publish anything, and does not appear alongside your saved versions in [**Reviewing and restoring previous versions**](/articles/reviewing-and-restoring-previous-versions).

---

Returning to a form
-------------------

If you leave a form before saving, for example by closing the tab or navigating away, and then come back to it, the site offers to bring back what you had typed.

- **Resume editing** puts everything back exactly as you left it, so you can carry on and press **Save** when you are ready.
- **Discard** throws the autosaved copy away and starts the form fresh.

The message names the exact time the copy was made, so if you are not sure whether it is worth keeping, you can use that to judge how recent it is.

---

If someone else saves the item first
------------------------------------

Autosave can only protect one version of the truth. If somebody else saves the same item while you still have it open, the site disables autosave for your session and deletes what it had stored, rather than risk overwriting their change. Reloading the page turns autosave back on for your session.
