Overview
--------

Real-time SEO is a writing aid. Once it is on a content type, a panel on the editing form scores the page as you type: whether the title and description are a sensible length, whether a chosen keyword appears in the right places, and how readable the text is.

No editing form shows the panel. Pages are not scored.

> **⚠️ Important:** Adding it to a content type is administrator work. Once it is there, anyone who edits that kind of page sees the panel.

Adding it to a content type
---------------------------

The panel is a field, so it is added the same way as any other field.

1. Go to **Structure**, then **Content types**, and press **Manage fields** on the type, such as Article.
2. Press **Create a new field** and choose the **Real-time SEO status & focused keywords** card.
3. Give it a label, such as SEO, and save it.

> **💡 Note:** A score is advice, not a rule. A page written clearly for the people who need it usually reads well to search engines too. For how titles and descriptions are generated, see [**Meta tags and search appearance**](/articles/meta-tags-and-search-appearance).

The settings screen
-------------------

Under **Configuration**, then **Search and metadata**, then **Real-time SEO**, an administrator can switch on **Enable auto refresh of the Real Time SEO widget result**, which updates the score while the editor types rather than when they pause. The same screen links to the sitemap and meta tag settings the tool reads from.
