Linking to pages, files and addresses

Overview
--------

Every link you add points at something: another page on your site, a document, or a page somewhere else entirely. The address you use decides whether it keeps working later.

This article covers adding a link, what to type for each kind of destination, and changing or removing a link afterwards.

---

Two kinds of address
--------------------

Every link address is one of two kinds:

Kind

Looks like

Use it for

Absolute

https://www.example.com/about/our-team

A page on another website. It names the site as well as the page.

Relative

/about/our-team

A page on your own site. It leaves the site name off, so it means the page on whichever site it is sitting on.

Relative is the better choice for your own content. If the site ever moves to a new address, those links keep working.

> **💡 Best practice:** Use a relative address for anything on your own site, and keep absolute addresses for links out to other websites.

---

Adding a link
-------------

Select the words you want to turn into a link and press **Link**. A small panel appears.

![The Link panel with the Displayed text field, the Link URL field holding a relative address, and the Insert button, outlined in red.](/storage/YEkTMR1sD5KGTzZ4lYBqDHBizxnYfkENXhtChQCf.png)

Field

What goes in it

Displayed text

The words the reader sees and clicks. This is filled in already if you selected text first.

Link URL

Where the link goes.

Insert

Adds the link and closes the panel.

There is no menu of link types to pick from, and the field does not suggest pages as you type. What you type in **Link URL** decides what kind of link you get:

To link to

Type

A page on your own site

Its relative address, starting with a slash, for example /foi.

A page on another website

The full address, including https://.

An email address

mailto: followed by the address, for example mailto:hello@example.com.

A phone number

tel: followed by the number, including the area code.

To offer a document for download, add it with **Insert Media** instead. [**Adding images, documents and video**](/articles/adding-images-documents-and-video) explains how.

### Finding a page's address

The quickest way to get an address right is to open the page in another browser tab and copy everything in the address bar after your site name. That is the relative address, which is what you want.

> **💡 Note:** If a page's address changes later, the site automatically forwards the old address to the new one, so a link you typed by hand keeps working.

---

Changing or removing a link
---------------------------

Click anywhere in a link you have already made. A small bar appears showing the address it points to, with buttons beside it.

- **Edit link** reopens the panel so you can change where the link goes.
- **Unlink** removes the link and leaves the words behind as ordinary text.

Removing a link is not the same as deleting the words. If you want the text gone as well, select it and delete it afterwards.
