Overview
--------

A landing page is a standing page that is not tied to a date: your homepage, the page for a section of the site, a program or service page, or a policy page such as Privacy or Freedom of information. Your homepage is itself a landing page.

Landing pages are built from components, the same building blocks used in articles, and can carry a side panel that helps readers move around a section or a long page.

> **💡 Note:** A landing page does not appear in any listing by itself. Readers reach it through a menu or a link, so plan where it will sit before you publish it.

---

Creating a landing page
-----------------------

1. Press **Create** in the sidebar and choose **Landing page**. The page is headed **Create Landing page**.
2. Fill in the **Title**.
3. Choose a **Side panel**. It starts at **None**, and the choices are described below.
4. On the **Content** tab, add components in the order you want them on the page.
5. On the **Banner** tab, add a **Subtitle** and a **Banner image** if you want them.
6. Under **Menu settings** in the right-hand column, switch on **Provide a menu link** if the page belongs in the navigation.
7. Choose **Draft** or **Published** from **Save as**, then press **Save**.

Choosing a side panel
---------------------

**Side panel** decides what sits beside the page's content. It is required, so every landing page has one of these three:

Choice

What readers see

Use it for

None

The page on its own, in a single column.

The homepage, campaign pages, and short pages.

Section menu

A list of the other pages in the same section of the site, with the current page marked.

A group of related pages, such as a set of policies.

Table of contents

An On this page list of the page's main headings, each one a link down the page.

A long page with several sections, such as a program guide.

> **⚠️ Important:** Each choice needs something from the page to work. A section menu only appears when the page sits in the main navigation, so give it a menu link under a parent. A table of contents is built from the page's Heading 2s and only appears when there are at least two. If either has nothing to show, the page falls back to a single column.

---

Building the page from components
---------------------------------

On the **Content** tab, the button below **Components** adds the first component. Its arrow opens the full list:

- Text, Alert and Call to action (CTA) for words and messages.
- Card grid, Feature cards, Highlights and Value chips for sets of short items.
- Accordion, Tabs and Process steps for content a reader opens or follows in order.
- People, Listing and Webform for staff profiles, lists of content, and forms.

Add them top to bottom in the order you want them on the page. You can reorder them later. See [**Add, remove, and delete site components**](/articles/add-remove-and-delete-site-components) and [**Reorder page components with drag and drop**](/articles/reorder-page-components-with-drag-and-drop).

> **💡 Note:** Use Heading 2 in your Text components for the main sections of a long page. Those are what the table of contents lists, and they give the page a shape a reader can scan.

---

Putting it in the navigation
----------------------------

A landing page is not collected onto any listing, so readers only find it through a menu or a link.

1. In the right-hand column, open **Menu settings**.
2. Switch on **Provide a menu link**.
3. Fill in the **Menu link title** and choose where the page sits under **Parent link**.

The page's address follows its place in the menu: the parent page's address, then the page title. Development applications, for example, sits under Planning & Development and lives at /planning/development-applications. The address is set when you save the page, so if you move it in the menu later, save the page again to update its address. To move or reorder it later, see [**Adding and organising menu items**](/articles/adding-and-organising-menu-items), and for typing your own address, [**Page addresses**](/articles/page-addresses).

### Taking a page down

Open the page, choose **Unpublished** from **Change to**, and press **Save**. It stays on the Content screen and can go back up at any time. Visitors stop seeing its menu link while it is unpublished. If the page is gone for good, remove the menu link as well, so the menu stays tidy.

---

Your homepage
-------------

The homepage is an ordinary landing page, titled Homepage, that the site shows at its main address. You edit it like any other landing page: open it and press **Edit**.

Choosing a different page as the homepage is an administrator's job, done in the site's basic settings.
