 How people navigate your site

Overview
--------

People reach a page on your site in four ways, and they are maintained in four different places. Knowing which is which saves a lot of hunting.

Route

What it is

Who looks after it

The menus

The navigation across the top of the site, the links in the footer, and the side menu on some pages.

Editors

Page addresses

The web address of each page, which the site writes for you from its title.

Editors

Redirects

What keeps an old address working after a page moves.

Editors

Breadcrumbs and search

The trail under the header, and the search box.

Administrators

![The Menus screen with the four menus visitors see outlined in red: Footer, Footer bottom, Main navigation and Section menus.](/storage/6tFg9p4h7lSlsDF9wx67Ua0wZeaVOA797wgY2wKV.png)

> **💡 Note:** Content editors can already manage menus, page addresses and redirects without asking anyone. Breadcrumbs and the search index are configuration, and they need an administrator.

---

The menus that matter
---------------------

Go to **Structure**, then **Menus**. If you are not sure how to reach that, [**Finding your way around the editing interface**](/articles/finding-your-way-around-the-editing-interface) covers the sidebar and the sections behind it.

Several menus are listed. Four of them appear on the site.

Menu

Where visitors see it

**Main navigation**

Across the top of every page, with a drop-down for each section.

**Footer**

The columns of links at the bottom of every page.

**Footer bottom**

The short row along the very bottom: Privacy, Copyright, Accessibility and Disclaimer.

**Section menus**

The in this section menu beside a landing page whose **Side panel** is set to **Section menu**. See [**Landing pages**](/articles/landing-pages).

The others are either switched off on the site or belong to the admin screens, so you can leave them alone.

Not everything at the bottom of the page is a menu.

Part of the page

Where you change it

The links in the footer

The **Footer** and **Footer bottom** menus

The Acknowledgement of Country above them

A block. See [**The homepage hero, site alert and footer acknowledgement**](/articles/the-homepage-hero-site-alert-and-footer-acknowledgement).

> **💡 Note:** You can add a page to **Main navigation** from the page itself, using the **Menu settings** section on its editing form. See [**Adding and organising menu items**](/articles/adding-and-organising-menu-items). The other menus are edited only from **Structure**, then **Menus**.

Where each job lives
--------------------

Job

Where

Add or reorder a menu link

Structure, then Menus

Put a page in the main menu while editing it

The Menu settings section on the item's own edit form

Change a page's address

The URL alias section on the item's own edit form

Add a redirect, or see what is missing

Configuration, then Search and metadata, then URL redirects
