Finding your way around the editing interface

Overview
--------

Doghouse SaaS keeps two things apart: the public site your visitors read, and the admin interface where you build it. Both live at the same address. Signing in simply reveals the second one.

Signing in takes you to the **Dashboard**. From then on, the administration sidebar runs down the left-hand side of every page you visit, public pages included. That sidebar is the way in to everything else.

This article is a tour of that interface, so the rest of the help centre has somewhere to point when it says "go to Content" or "open the sidebar".

---

The sidebar
-----------

The sidebar lists the places you can work. Everyone who can sign in sees these items:

Item

What it is for

Dashboard

Your starting point after signing in.

Create

Starting a new article, event or landing page. It lists the content types you are allowed to create.

Pages

Pages made with a separate page-building tool. Your landing pages are under CMS instead.

Blocks

Reusable blocks shown around the site, such as the hero or a site alert.

CMS

The Content screen: every article, event and landing page. Covered below.

Media

The library of images, documents and video.

Trash

What has been deleted.

Front page

A link to your site's home page, with shortcuts underneath, including Logout.

Structure

Menus. Administrators find more here, such as content types and taxonomy.

Configuration

URL aliases and URL redirects. Administrators find the site's wider settings here.

Help

A link to the Drupal CMS documentation, on an external site.

Your username

View profile, Edit profile and Log out.

Administrators also see **Tools**, **Appearance**, **Extend**, **People** and **Reports**, where the site itself is set up.

- An item with an arrow beside it, such as **Structure**, opens to show what is inside when you press it.
- The logo at the very top takes you to your site's home page.
- The arrow at the bottom left collapses the sidebar to icons when you want more room, and brings it back.

> **💡 Note:** If your sidebar is shorter than an administrator's, nothing is broken. It only shows what your role permits, and the missing items are simply not yours to change.

### The Dashboard

The **Dashboard** is where you land after signing in, and **Dashboard** at the top of the sidebar brings you back to it.

Panel

What it shows

Recent content

The content changed most recently, with its type, status and when it was updated. Click a title to open it.

Recent pages

Pages made with a separate page-building tool. Your site's landing pages are not listed here; find them under CMS.

Top tasks

Shortcuts to common jobs. What it lists depends on your role.

---

Finding content
---------------

**CMS** in the sidebar opens the Content screen, a list of everything on the site. With a few hundred pages this becomes the screen you use most, so it is worth a few minutes now.

![The Content screen, with its row of seven tabs outlined in red, the Overview, Moderated content and Scheduled content row beneath, and the Title, Content type and Published status filters.](/storage/CGqZGXPDAV1Zt6QcEuQxwBLAULwt8b3l0Q1ch74D.png)

> **💡 Note:** There is no separate section per kind of content. Articles, events and landing pages all live in this one list, and the **Content type** filter is how you narrow it to the one you want.

### The tabs across the top

Up to seven tabs sit above the list. Two of them depend on your role, so an editor sees five:

Tab

What it holds

Content

The default list: every article, event and landing page.

Blocks

Reusable blocks shown around the site, such as the hero, a site alert or the Acknowledgement of Country.

Pages

Pages made with the separate page-building tool. Empty unless that tool is in use.

Scheduled transitions

Changes queued to happen to content at a set time. Administrators only.

Sitewide alerts

Alert messages that can appear across the whole site. Administrators only.

Media

The library of images, documents and video, covered in full by [**File and media management**](/articles/file-and-media-management).

Trash

What has been deleted. Look here before assuming something is gone for good.

A second row underneath splits the list itself three ways:

- **Overview**: everything.
- **Moderated content**: items sitting in a workflow state, such as a draft. See [**Content workflow and statuses**](/articles/content-workflow-and-statuses).
- **Scheduled content**: items queued to publish or unpublish later.

> **ℹ️ Info:** Scheduling is installed but not switched on for articles, events or landing pages as standard, so the scheduled lists stay empty until an administrator turns it on. See [**Scheduling content to publish later**](/articles/scheduling-content-to-publish-later).

### The three filters

Three filters sit above the list, and they work together, so you can narrow to unpublished events in one go.

- **Title**: matches part of a title, so "grants" finds every item with grants in the name.
- **Content type**: narrows to one kind of thing: Article, Event or Landing page.
- **Published status**: separates what visitors can see from what is not yet published.

Set any combination of the three, then press **Filter** to apply them. The list reloads showing only what matches.

### Reading the list

Column

What it tells you

Title

The name of the item. Click it to view the page.

Content type

Article, Event or Landing page.

Author

Who owns the item.

Status

Published or not.

Updated

When it last changed. Sort by this to find what you were working on yesterday.

Operations

At the right-hand end. Edit, plus an arrow that opens more actions such as Delete, Duplicate and View, depending on your role.

Click any column heading to sort by it. For the fuller history of a single page, each change and who made it, see [**Working from a page**](#working-from-a-page) below.

### Making something new

To create rather than find, use **Create** near the top of the sidebar, or the **Add content** button on the Content screen. [**Creating content and choosing the right content type**](/articles/creating-content-and-choosing-the-right-content-type) walks through it.

---

The shape of a content form
---------------------------

Every content form follows the same two-column layout, whether you are writing an article or building a landing page.

![The Create Article form: the title and Components on the left, and the settings column on the right outlined in red, showing Save as, Menu settings, Simple XML Sitemap and URL alias.](/storage/3c8UzULWNn4XlTi5NzSNEkRNU0Qjkis4H4SWsvDg.png)

The wide left-hand column holds the content itself: the title, the components that make up the page, and whatever fields that content type defines. This is the part that becomes the page. [**Site components overview**](/articles/site-components-overview) explains the components.

The narrower right-hand column holds settings *about* the page rather than the page itself. It is easy to miss, and it is where most "how do I change the address of this page" questions are answered.

Setting

What it is for

Revision log message

A short note on what you changed, kept in the page's history.

Save as

Whether this save is a draft or goes live.

Menu settings

Adding the page to a menu. See [**Adding and organising menu items**](/articles/adding-and-organising-menu-items).

Simple XML Sitemap

Administrators only. Whether the page is listed in the sitemap that search engines read.

URL alias

The page's web address. It is generated automatically unless you set one.

URL redirects

Old addresses that forward to this page. Shown once the page has been saved.

Authoring information

Who wrote the page and when.

**Save** and **Preview** sit at the top right and stay pinned there as you scroll, so you never have to hunt to the bottom of a long form to save. The button beside them hides and shows the right-hand column. Nothing you type is stored until you press **Save**.

> **⚠️ Important:** Leaving a content form open in a browser tab does not keep your work safe. If you are interrupted, save first. The site may offer to restore an unsaved draft when you return, but treat that as a safety net rather than something to rely on. See [**Recovering unsaved work with autosave**](/articles/recovering-unsaved-work-with-autosave) for exactly how it works.

---

Getting back to your site
-------------------------

**Back to site**, at the top left of any admin screen, returns you to the public home page. The sidebar stays with you, so you can browse the site as a visitor would while still being signed in.

![Animation: pressing Back to site at the top left of the Content screen and arriving on the public home page, shown full screen.](/storage/wqYqXXUVVbw5Dj04LKkt2qjopdRyOS3hIHunLlzZ.gif)

This is the most reliable way to check your work. The editing form shows you fields; only the live page shows you what a visitor actually gets: the heading sizes, how an image sits beside text, whether a table fits on a phone.

### Working from a page

When you are viewing a page you can edit, a bar across the top shows its title and status, with an **Edit** button at the right. That is the fastest route from spotting a problem to fixing it.

The **More actions** button beside it (three dots) opens the rest: **Edit template**, **Delete**, **Manage display**, **Revisions** and **Duplicate**, depending on your role.

![A page viewed while signed in, full screen, with the More actions menu open beside the Edit button and Revisions outlined in red.](/storage/ctOKEouosHThr0ifkHOeUG5WEzGnFzk0wFpq6K2L.png)

**Revisions** shows each change to the page and who made it. [**Reviewing and restoring previous versions**](/articles/reviewing-and-restoring-previous-versions) covers what it gives you.
