Overview
--------

District provides a central media library where you can manage all your site's files, images, videos, documents, and more. This article covers supported file types, how Media Directories work, and how to upload, tag, and manage your media.

Supported file types
--------------------

District supports the following media types:

- Audio
- File
- Image
- Remote Video
- Video

> **💡 Note:** Supported file types may vary by site. Refer to your user guide documentation for the full list available on your site.

Media Directories
-----------------

Media Directories expands the core media library by providing a hierarchical tree-view structure for organising your files. Key features include:

- **Hierarchical structure:** Media files are organised in a tree of folders and subfolders. Directories appear in the left column; files (images, documents, etc.) appear in the right column.
- **Media preview:** Selecting a media file shows a preview for quick inspection without leaving the tree view.
- **Search functionality:** Search for specific media items within directories — particularly useful for large collections.

Creating directories
--------------------

Directories let you categorise and organise your media in a hierarchical structure using descriptive folder names.

1. Navigate to a section of the site that includes a media upload field to open the media dialog (e.g., the Media field in the Media site component) by accessing the Drupal administration dashboard..
2. In the media dialog, right-click on the **Root** directory and select **New folder**. A new folder will be created under Root.

> **💡 Note:** You can also rename, delete, or create subdirectories by right-clicking on any existing folder.

Adding and tagging media
------------------------

When adding media to content, you can assign it to a directory to keep your library organised.

1. In the content editing form, locate and click the **Select media** button in the media field.
2. In the entity browser that opens, click **Add media** to upload a new file.
3. Choose the media type to upload (e.g. Image, Remote Video). Permitted file extensions are listed next to the field.
4. On the Add Media screen, select the **directory** to assign the file to from the dropdown. The dropdown also supports autocomplete.
5. Fill in any required fields and click **Save and select**.
6. You'll be returned to the entity browser with the uploaded file selected. Click **Select media** to insert it into the content field.

Tagging existing media
----------------------

Existing media items can be edited to assign them to a directory.

1. In the administration menu, go to **Content > Media**.
2. Locate the media item you want to update and click **Edit**.
3. Under the **Directory** label, select the appropriate directory from the dropdown. The dropdown supports autocomplete.
4. Click **Save**. The media item will now appear in the selected directory.

Managing existing media
-----------------------

From the media library you can also edit, delete, and search your files:

- **Editing:** Click on a file to view its details. You can update the name, alternative text, and other fields.
- **Deleting:** Select one or more files and use the **Delete** action. This cannot be undone.
- **Searching and filtering:** Use the search bar and filters to find files by name, type, or date.
