 Data retention and deletion

Overview
--------

Deleting a content item does not erase it straight away. It moves to a trash bin first, so a mistaken delete can still be undone.

> **⚠️ Important:** The trash covers articles, events and landing pages. Media items and blocks are not covered: deleting one of those is permanent the moment you confirm, with no trash to fall back on.

---

Finding and restoring deleted content
-------------------------------------

1. In the admin menu, open **Content**.
2. Open the **Trash** tab, the last in the row of tabs above the list.

![The Trash screen with the Trash tab and the table of deleted items outlined in red, its columns running from Title to Deleted, currently empty.](/storage/7IBOBDdID99sxgeS99OaPa4MioMpr1X99s6cTTUh.png)

Each row records what was removed and by whom: **Title**, **Content type**, **Author**, **Status**, **Deleted by** and **Deleted**, with an **Operations** button offering **Restore**.

You can see what is in the trash, but restoring an item or purging it for good needs an administrator.

> **⚠️ Important:** Nothing is purged automatically, so a deleted item stays in the trash until an administrator removes it by hand. An administrator can switch on a schedule to empty it instead, which arrives switched off and suggests 30 days.

Form submissions are different
------------------------------

Webform submissions do not go through this trash bin at all; deleting one is immediate and permanent. If you are looking for guidance on how long to keep those, see [**Reading and exporting form submissions**](/articles/reading-and-exporting-form-submissions).
