Creating content and choosing the right content type

Overview
--------

Everything you write on your site is one of three kinds of item: an article, an event or a landing page. The kind you choose is the first decision you make, and it settles the rest: each one gives you a different form, asks for different information, and appears in different places on the site.

---

Starting a new item
-------------------

1. Press **Create** in the sidebar.
2. Choose **Article**, **Event** or **Landing page**.
3. Fill in the form and press **Save**.

You can also press **Add content** on the Content screen. That opens the **Add content item** page, which lists the same three types with a line about each.

> **💡 Note:** You do not have to finish in one sitting. Every form saves your work in the background while you type, and offers it back if you leave and return. See [**Recovering unsaved work with autosave**](/articles/recovering-unsaved-work-with-autosave).

---

What each type is for
---------------------

Type

Use it for

Where it appears

Article

News, announcements, media releases and speeches: anything dated that you file under a news category.

The News & media page, newest first.

Event

Anything people can attend at a set date and time: a workshop, an information session, a consultation, a symposium.

The Events page, soonest first, until it has finished.

Landing page

Standing pages that are not dated: your homepage, a section page, a program page, a policy page such as Privacy.

Wherever you link to it or place it in a menu.

> **💡 Note:** Pick by what the thing is, not by which form looks easiest. An event made as a landing page will never appear on the Events page, and a news item made as a landing page will never appear on News & media, because each of those pages collects one type and ignores the rest.

---

The form changes with the type
------------------------------

Every form has a **Title**, a **Content** tab and a **Banner** tab. The **Banner** tab holds an optional **Subtitle** and **Banner image**, shown across the top of the page. The rest differs:

Type

Main content

Required before it will save

Article

Components, built up on the Content tab. News categories sit on the Banner tab.

Title

Event

A Body text box on the Content tab, and an extra Event details tab for the date, location and type.

Title, and a start and end date and time

Landing page

Components, built up on the Content tab.

Title, and Side panel

A red asterisk marks every required field on the form, so you never have to guess. Each type has its own guide: [**Publishing news and media releases**](/articles/publishing-news-and-media-releases), [**Adding events**](/articles/adding-events) and [**Landing pages**](/articles/landing-pages).

Starting from an item you already have
--------------------------------------

When the thing you are making is much like something already on the site, copy it instead of retyping it.

1. Open the item, press **More actions** (the three dots beside **Edit**) and choose **Duplicate**. On the Content screen, the same option sits under the arrow beside **Edit** on the item's row.
2. A create form opens with everything already filled in, and a message saying which item you are duplicating.
3. Change the title and anything else that differs, then press **Save**.

![A Create Event form opened by Duplicate, with the You are duplicating message outlined in red above the copied title.](/storage/1nFZZswBMaTcghnQDXrL9sMOZcJlDfXWbbraCH25.png)

> **⚠️ Important:** The copy keeps the original's title exactly, so change it before you save or you will have two items with the same name in every listing. Nothing is created until you press **Save**, and the copy starts as a draft.

---

Settings beside the form
------------------------

The right-hand column holds settings that apply to the item as a whole rather than to its content:

Setting

What it does

Menu settings

Switch on Provide a menu link to put the item in the site navigation, then give it a Menu link title and choose a Parent link.

Simple XML Sitemap

Administrators only. Whether search engines are told about the item. The default suits almost everything.

URL alias

Left alone, Generate automatic URL alias builds the address for you: /news/ and the title for an article, /events/ and the title for an event, and for a landing page its place in the menu followed by its title. Switch it off to type your own.

Authoring information

Administrators only. Who the item belongs to, and when it was written.

URL redirects

Shown once the item has been saved. Lists any old addresses that forward to this item, for example after its title changed.

---

Checking it before you commit
-----------------------------

1. Press **Preview** to see the item as a visitor would.
2. Press **Back to content editing** at the very top left of the preview to return to the form.
3. Press **Save**.

Saving and publishing
---------------------

All three types go through a workflow, so there is no simple published switch. On a new item, **Save as** beside the form offers **Draft** or **Published**. On an item that already exists, the right-hand column shows its **Current state**, and **Change to** moves it to **Draft**, **Published** or **Unpublished**.

> **⚠️ Important:** Check that choice before you save. The most common surprise is an item saved and then not visible on the site, which is almost always a state left at **Draft**. [**Content workflow and statuses**](/articles/content-workflow-and-statuses) explains the states.

### Taking an item back off the site

Unpublishing is not deleting. The item and its history stay where they are, and visitors simply cannot reach it, so you can put it back at any time.

1. Open the item for editing.
2. Choose **Unpublished** from **Change to**.
3. Press **Save**.

An event drops off the Events page by itself once it has finished, but its page stays published until someone unpublishes it. Nothing else is taken down for you.
