 Confirmations, notifications and spam

Overview
--------

Pressing Submit should do two things: tell the person it worked, and tell your team it arrived. Both are set on the **Settings** tab of the form, and neither happens by accident.

> **⚠️ Important:** This is an administrator's job. Content editors have no form permissions, so they cannot reach these screens.

---

What the visitor sees
---------------------

1. Open the form and go to **Settings**.
2. Open the **Confirmation** sub-tab.
3. Choose how to confirm: a message on the same page, a separate confirmation page, or sending them to another address.
4. Write the message, then press **Save**.

> **💡 Tip:** Say what happens next, not just that it worked. *Thank you, we will reply within five working days* prevents more phone calls than *Your submission has been received*.

---

Telling your team
-----------------

A form does not email anyone until you add an email to it.

1. On the **Settings** tab, open **Emails / Handlers**.
2. Press **Add email**.
3. Set who it goes to in the **To** field.
4. Set the subject and the message. Both can include the answers people gave.
5. Press **Save**.

> **⚠️ Important:** Check this on any form you inherit. On this site the **Contact** form has two emails set up, a confirmation to the sender and a notification to the site, and **Enquiry** has none, so submissions to the second one are stored and nobody is told they arrived.

> **💡 Note:** You can add more than one email, for example one to the team and one back to the person who filled the form in. Each is a separate entry on this screen.

Keeping spam out
----------------

A public form attracts automated submissions. Two protections are available on this site.

Protection

How it works

CAPTCHA

Added to a form as an element, like a question. The visitor has to pass a challenge.

Honeypot

A hidden field people never see. Automated submissions fill it in and are rejected.

Neither form on this site carries a CAPTCHA element yet. Once added, it shows on the **Build** tab like any other question.

> **ℹ️ Info:** What the visitor actually sees depends on the **Challenge type** chosen when the element was added. The only challenge installed on this site is **Math**, a simple sum the visitor answers, and it is also the site-wide default.

### Adding a CAPTCHA

![The Add CAPTCHA element panel open beside the Build tab, with its Challenge type set to Default challenge type outlined in red.](/storage/70Hpweb2u0bkGm3gdEgtcmSmfYvp0Npwk5twuZAj.png)

1. On the form's **Build** tab, press **Add element**.
2. Type *CAPTCHA* into **Filter by element name**, or find it under **Advanced elements**.
3. Press **Add element** beside it.
4. Choose a **Challenge type**, or leave it on **Default challenge type** to use the site-wide setting.
5. Press **Save**.

### Turning honeypot on or off

Unlike CAPTCHA, honeypot is not an element you add to the Build tab. It is a single switch on the form's own settings.

1. On the form's **Settings** tab, stay on **General** and open **Third party settings**, then **Honeypot**.
2. Tick or untick **Protect \[form name\] with Honeypot**.
3. Press **Save**.

> **⚠️ Important:** A separate, site-wide Honeypot screen under Configuration also exists, but it governs Drupal's own forms, such as login and comments, not the forms covered by this article. For a form on this site, the Third party settings checkbox is the one that matters.
