Overview
--------

The breadcrumb is the trail of links under the header that shows where a page sits, and lets somebody step back up without using the browser button.

> *Home / News & media / Community consultation opens for new orbital spaceport*

It is built for you from the page's address, so it looks after itself as content is added. There is nothing for an editor to fill in.

> **⚠️ Important:** Breadcrumb settings are administrator work. Content editors cannot reach the screen, and they do not need to: the trail follows the address, and the address follows the title.

---

How the trail is built
----------------------

The trail comes from the parts of the page's address. An article at */news/orbital-spaceport-consultation* gives two steps after Home, one for each part. Each step is named after the page at that address, so */news* shows as **News & media**, the title of the news listing.

That is why [**Page addresses**](/articles/page-addresses) matters more than it looks. The address patterns are what group related pages together, and the breadcrumb is where visitors see that grouping.

---

The settings
------------

An administrator will find these under **Configuration**, then **User interface**, then **Easy Breadcrumb**. The ones worth knowing about are these.

Setting

What it does

**Include the front page as a segment in the breadcrumb**

Starts every trail with Home. On as things stand.

**Include the current page as a segment in the breadcrumb**

Ends the trail with the page you are on. On as things stand, and not a link, which is the usual convention.

**Remove repeated identical segments**

Stops the same word appearing twice in a row when an address repeats it. On as things stand.

**Use the real page title when available**

Names each step after the page at that address rather than the words in the address. On as things stand.

**Applies to administration pages**

Whether the admin screens get a trail too. Off as things stand.

> **💡 Note:** Changing these affects every page at once. It is a decision about the whole site, not something to adjust for one section.
