Overview
--------

An event is anything people can attend at a set date and time:

- A workshop or an information session
- A public consultation
- A symposium, a briefing or a roadshow

Events are collected onto the Events page by themselves, soonest first, and drop off it once they have finished.

> **💡 Note:** Events go through the workflow, so a new event is saved as a **Draft** unless you choose **Published** from **Save as**.

---

Adding an event
---------------

1. Press **Create** in the sidebar and choose **Event**. The page is headed **Create Event**.
2. Fill in the **Title**.
3. On the **Content** tab, write the **Body**: what the event is, who it is for, and anything people need to bring or know.
4. On the **Banner** tab, add a **Subtitle** and a **Banner image** if you want them.
5. On the **Event details** tab, fill in the dates and the rest of the details, described below.
6. Choose **Draft** or **Published** from **Save as**, then press **Save**.

The Event details tab
---------------------

Field

What goes in it

Start date and End date

A date and a time for each. Both are required, so an event always has a start and a finish.

Location

Where it happens, such as a hall and town, or Online. Optional.

Event type

The kind of event. Shown as a label on the event, and used by the filter on the Events page. Optional.

Register link

A booking or registration address in URL, and the button's wording in Link text. For a page on your own site, start typing its title in URL and choose it from the list. Leave Link text empty and the button reads Register.

The dates are real calendar dates, so the site sorts events by when they happen and knows when one has finished. On the event page they appear as the day and date, with the time span beside them.

### Event types

Six types are available: Consultation, Industry briefing, Information session, Roadshow, Symposium and Workshop. Only an administrator can add to the list. See [**Taxonomy: vocabularies and terms**](/articles/taxonomy-vocabularies-and-terms).

---

Running a consultation
----------------------

A consultation is an event with its **Event type** set to **Consultation**.

- Use the **Body** to say what is being consulted on and how to respond.
- Set the **End date** to when responses close. The consultation drops off the Events page once that date and time have passed.
- Use the **Register link** for the survey or submission form, with Link text such as Have your say.

When it closes, the consultation's own page stays on the site. Unpublish it, or update the Body to say responses have closed, so anyone following an old link knows where things stand.

---

Featuring an event
------------------

Tick **Featured event**, near the top of the form, to show an event as the spotlight above the list on the Events page. If more than one event is featured, the one happening soonest wins.

---

Where events appear
-------------------

A published event joins the Events page on its own. You do not have to add it anywhere. Its address is built from its title under /events/.

- Events are listed soonest first, five to a page.
- An event drops off the list once its end date and time have passed.
- Visitors can filter the list by event type.

> **💡 Note:** A finished event leaves the list but its page stays published. If it should not be reachable any more, open it, choose **Unpublished** from **Change to**, and save.
