Adding and organising menu items

Overview
--------

The menus are the site's signposts. Adding a link, moving one, or taking one down is ordinary editing work, and you do not need an administrator for any of it.

---

Finding the menu
----------------

Go to **Structure**, then **Menus**, and press **Edit menu** on the one you want. Almost always that is **Main navigation**, the menu across the top, or one of the two footer menus, **Footer** and **Footer bottom**.

The screen lists the links in the order visitors see them, with three columns.

Column

What it shows

Menu link

The wording a visitor reads. Child links sit indented under their parent.

Enabled

Whether the link is showing. Untick to hide it without deleting it.

Operations

Only **Edit** shows. Press the arrow next to it to reach **Add child**, **Delete** and **View**.

The **Operations** column looks like a single **Edit** button. The arrow beside it is easy to miss, and it is where the other three live.

---

Adding a link
-------------

1. Press **Add link** at the top right of the menu screen.
2. Fill in the **Menu link title**, which is the wording visitors read.
3. Put the address in **Link**. Start typing a page title and the field will offer matches, so you rarely need to type an address by hand.
4. Leave **Parent link** alone to put the link at the top level, or choose the link it should sit under.
5. Press **Save**.

> **💡 Note:** There is a second route to the same form. The arrow beside a row's **Edit** button offers **Add child**, which opens **Add menu link** with **Parent link** already set to that row.

> **💡 Tip:** Linking by title rather than by address means the link follows the page if its address later changes. It is the safer habit.

---

Adding a page from its editing form
-----------------------------------

You can also put a page into **Main navigation** while you are editing it, without leaving the page.

1. Open **Menu settings** in the right-hand column of the editing form.
2. Switch on **Provide a menu link**.
3. Check the **Menu link title**, which is the wording visitors read.
4. Choose the **Parent link** it should sit under, or leave it at **<Main navigation>** for the top level.
5. Save the page.

> **💡 Note:** Only **Main navigation** is offered here. Links in the footer menus are added from **Structure**, then **Menus**. On a landing page, the parent you choose also sets the start of its address. See [**Page addresses**](/articles/page-addresses).

---

Changing the order
------------------

Drag a link by its handle to move it up, down, or under another link to make it a child. The order on this screen is the order visitors see.

If dragging is awkward, press **Show row weights** above the table. A **Weight** column appears and you can set the order as numbers instead. It is hidden until you press it, and the link then reads **Hide row weights**.

Weights change the order only. To move a link under a different parent without dragging, open its **Edit** form and change **Parent link** there.

> **⚠️ Important:** Nothing you drag or untick is kept until you press **Save** at the foot of the screen. Leaving the page first loses the lot.

---

Hiding and removing
-------------------

- To take a link down for a while, untick **Enabled** and save. The link stops showing and everything about it is kept.
- To remove it for good, press the arrow beside **Edit** and choose **Delete**. This removes the link only. The page it pointed at is untouched.
