 Activity log

Overview
--------

The activity log records system-level events across your site: who signed in, what cron ran, and attempts to reach a page someone was not allowed to see. It is not a record of content changes. For who edited a page and when, see [**Reviewing and restoring previous versions**](/articles/reviewing-and-restoring-previous-versions) instead.

> **⚠️ Important:** This is an administrator's job. Content editors have no access to these screens.

---

Reading the log
---------------

1. In the admin menu, open **Reports**, then **Recent log messages**.
2. Use **Filter log messages** to narrow the list by **Type** (such as *user*, *access denied* or *cron*) or **Severity**.
3. Press an entry to see its full detail.

Two entry types are worth knowing:

Type

What it tells you

**user**

Sign-ins and sessions, including one-time login links.

**access denied**

Someone, or something, tried to reach a page they did not have permission for. The path they tried is shown.

### A quicker way to see access denied

Scrolling the log is slow if you are chasing a permissions problem. A separate report groups those same entries by path and counts them, so the one being hit most often comes to the top.

1. Open **Reports**, then **Top 'access denied' errors**.
2. Read the **Count** column against each path in **Message**.

> **💡 Note:** A matching **Top 'page not found' errors** report sits beside it, but broken links and missing pages are tracked on their own screen. See [**Redirects and broken links**](/articles/redirects-and-broken-links).

> **💡 Note:** The log is not kept forever. It holds the latest 1,000 entries, and older ones are cleared automatically as new ones come in, so treat it as a recent-activity view, not a permanent archive.
