Overview
--------

A 404 page appears when someone reaches an address that does not exist on your site; the number is the standard web code for "not found". It happens most often when a link is typed incorrectly, or a page has been moved or deleted without a redirect put in its place.

---

What visitors see
-----------------

Visitors see a plain page in the site's own design: the usual header, menus and footer, a breadcrumb, the heading **Page not found** and the line *The requested page could not be found.* There are no suggestions or links on the page itself, so a visitor has to use the menus or search to carry on. That is why a redirect is the better fix.

Keeping 404s to a minimum
-------------------------

A 404 page is a dead end for a visitor, so the fewer they hit, the better. If you move or rename a page, add a redirect from its old address so existing links and bookmarks keep working, and use the 404 report to see which broken addresses people are actually hitting. See [**Redirects and broken links**](/articles/redirects-and-broken-links).
